Castle
Stuart dates back to 1625 and has stood as a strong refuge and retreat
for the Earls of Moray and the Stuart family since then. In more recent
times, the Castle has been restored to its former glory and now offers
magnificent accommodation in a historic setting. The ascending storeys
of the east and west wings have a total of eight double bedrooms,
all furnished in the Jacobean period, some with four poster beds.
Each of the bedrooms are named after the clans who fought and died
for "Bonnie Prince Charlie" at nearby Culloden, are decorated
in their individual tartans. The turnpike stairways lead guests down
from the battlements and into the main public rooms of the Castle.
The Great Hall makes a truly impressive setting for the ceremonial
occasion. This Presence Chamber boasts an open fireplace large enough
to roast an ox, and was used on occasions
in the past as the Laird's Lug (The Laird's ear). By hiding a servant in the small-concealed niche in the Castle wall, the Earl could discover guest's indiscretions and plots!
