Visitors to BALFOUR CASTLE gain the opportunity to re-live the heyday of the Victorian era. The Castle still contains all of the original fixtures, fittings and furniture with which it was lavishly equipped on its completion by the Balfour family in 1848. It was formerly the most northerly castle hotel in the world but is now classified as a guesthouse by the Scottish Tourist Board. If it were to comply with Hotel standards it would possibly mean the ruin of the character of the castle as it stands today and the current classification confers a lesser status than it actually represents. What is guaranteed is that is the only accommodation of its kind in Orkney. Set in seventy acres of wooded grounds, Balfour has panoramic views of surrounding islands. Its location is perfect for trips to other islands and to the "mainland" of Orkney to visit Skara Brae, Maes Howe, Ring of Brogar and other fascinating archaeological sites. The traditional surroundings of the oak panelled Library, and beautiful Drawing Room exemplify the informal atmosphere at Balfour. The Library contains an extensive Orkney book collection, with additional entertainment provided by the Billiard Room. The bedrooms are individual in character with Canopy and Victorian brass beds. Guests can avail themselves of private guided trips to offshore seal colonies and breathtaking seabird cliffs, sandy beaches and miles of coastal walks. Balfour produces all its own vegetables from its Victorian walled gardens, game, meats and cheese from the home farms, and of course an abundance of seafood. The present owners welcome guests to share their home and experience the true peace and quiet of island life.
